Overview

Taurine 50 mg/mL

Taurine is the most abundant free sulfonic acid in the human body, present at high concentrations in the heart, skeletal muscle, retina, brain, and liver. Unlike most amino acids, taurine is not incorporated into proteins but functions as a free intracellular osmolyte, antioxidant, bile acid conjugate, calcium modulator, and membrane stabilizer. Taurine is conditionally essential: the body synthesizes it from cysteine via cysteine sulfinic acid decarboxylase, but synthesis declines significantly with age and under physiological stress. Injectable delivery provides bioavailability independent of GI absorption or dietary intake variability.

Mechanism of Action

Taurine modulates intracellular calcium handling by regulating calcium channel conductance and the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger in cardiomyocytes, reducing calcium overload-driven arrhythmogenesis and supporting myocardial contractility. In the liver, taurine conjugates bile acids to form taurocholic and taurochenodeoxycholic acids, which are more water-soluble and less cytotoxic than glycine-conjugated bile acids, protecting hepatocytes from bile acid-induced apoptosis. As an osmolyte, taurine regulates cell volume in response to osmotic stress through taurine transporter (TauT) activity, protecting cells from hypotonic swelling and hypertonic shrinkage. Taurine scavenges hypochlorous acid (HOCl) produced by activated neutrophils to form taurine chloramine, a less reactive oxidant, reducing oxidative damage at sites of inflammation. It activates GABA-A receptors and modulates glycine receptor conductance, contributing to its inhibitory neuromodulatory effects. Taurine also regulates mitochondrial protein synthesis and membrane potential, supporting mitochondrial biogenesis and reducing reactive oxygen species production at complexes I and III of the electron transport chain.

Injection

Administered intramuscularly ensures complete absorption and immediate bioavailability.

Benefits

Cardiovascular Protection

Modulates cardiomyocyte calcium handling via Na+/Ca2+ exchanger regulation and calcium channel conductance, reducing arrhythmogenesis and supporting myocardial contractility and rhythm stability.

Hepatic Support

Conjugates bile acids to taurine-bile acid salts that are less cytotoxic and more water-soluble than glycine conjugates, protecting hepatocytes from bile acid-induced apoptosis and supporting cholesterol metabolism.

Antioxidant Defense

Scavenges hypochlorous acid from activated neutrophils to form the less reactive taurine chloramine, reducing oxidative tissue damage at sites of acute and chronic inflammation.

Mitochondrial Function

Regulates mitochondrial membrane potential and supports the mitochondrial tRNA modification required for proper electron transport chain protein synthesis, reducing mitochondrial ROS production.

Neuromodulation

Activates inhibitory GABA-A and glycine receptors, contributing to CNS inhibitory tone, neuroprotection, and the regulation of neuronal excitability associated with aging.

FAQs

What is Taurine?

Taurine is a prescription therapy used for cardiovascular and wellness support.

Who should use Taurine?

Patients seeking support for cardiovascular and wellness support may qualify after evaluation by a licensed provider.

Does Taurine require a prescription?

Yes. This is a compounded injectable preparation requiring a valid prescription from a licensed provider. Lab evaluation of cardiovascular, hepatic, and metabolic baseline markers is recommended before starting.

What are the possible side effects?

Taurine is generally well-tolerated at therapeutic doses. Injection-site soreness or mild bruising is the most common effect. Rapid or high-volume injection may cause transient nausea or headache. Hypotension is rarely reported. Excessive doses may cause GI discomfort or osmotic diarrhea.

Who should not use Taurine?

Not for patients with known hypersensitivity to taurine or any excipient in the compounded preparation. Patients with severe renal impairment require provider evaluation given taurine's renal excretion pathway and the risk of accumulation. Do not take if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Are there any drug interactions?

Taurine may have additive effects with antihypertensive medications given its vasodilatory and calcium-modulating activity. Concurrent use with lithium requires monitoring as both share renal tubular transport pathways. Patients on anticoagulants should disclose this to their provider given taurine's reported platelet-modulating activity.

Is Taurine safe if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

Patients with congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, or hepatic disease may benefit most but require close provider supervision and cardiac or liver function monitoring. Patients with chronic kidney disease require evaluation given renal taurine clearance. Diabetic patients should note that taurine may modestly improve insulin sensitivity and discuss this with their provider.
