SS-31 Elamipretide

SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a mitochondria-targeting peptide that crosses the blood-brain barrier and concentrates within the inner mitochondrial membrane. It reverses mitochondrial dysfunction by eliminating damaging reactive oxygen species (ROS) — addressing the cellular root of aging and neurodegeneration.

Overview

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of every cell in the body — and when they dysfunction, the consequences are systemic. SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide uniquely engineered to cross the blood-brain barrier and accumulate at high concentrations within the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM), the site where energy production and oxidative stress are most critically regulated. By scavenging damaging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and restoring normal mitochondrial function, SS-31 addresses the shared cellular mechanism underlying both aging and a broad spectrum of neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases.

How SS-31 Works

ROS Elimination

Free Radical Oxygen Species Scavenging

SS-31 directly neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) — damaging free radicals generated as a byproduct of mitochondrial energy production. Chronic ROS accumulation is a primary driver of mitochondrial membrane degradation, cellular aging, and inflammatory cascades. By obliterating ROS at the source, SS-31 halts the cycle of oxidative damage before it propagates.

Inner Mitochondrial Membrane Targeting

Highly Concentrated at the IMM

SS-31's unique molecular structure allows it to selectively bind to cardiolipin — a phospholipid concentrated exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane. This targeting concentrates the peptide precisely where mitochondrial dysfunction originates, restoring membrane integrity, electron transport chain efficiency, and ATP production at the cellular level.

Blood-Brain Barrier Penetration

CNS Access — Subcutaneous Injection

Unlike many compounds that cannot cross the blood-brain barrier, SS-31 readily penetrates into the central nervous system following subcutaneous injection. This CNS bioavailability is what makes SS-31 a promising candidate for neurodegenerative conditions — delivering its mitochondrial rescue effects directly to neurons in the brain and spinal cord.

FAQs

Dosage & Administration

Inject 20 units (0.2 mL) subcutaneously once daily. Use a short insulin-gauge needle and rotate injection sites — the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm are typical sites for subcutaneous self-injection. Administer at a consistent time each day for best results. Swab the injection site with an alcohol wipe before use and dispose of used needles in an approved sharps container. Do not exceed the prescribed dose. Your provider will determine the appropriate concentration and may adjust the protocol based on your individual response.

Precautions & Side Effects

SS-31 Elamipretide is a compounded prescription peptide. It is not FDA-approved or evaluated by the FDA for safety, efficacy, or quality. A valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider is required. Must be 18 or older to order. Not available for shipping to Alabama, California, DC, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Texas, Washington, or West Virginia. Consult your provider before use if you have existing neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, or mitochondrial conditions, or if you are currently taking immunosuppressants or other injectable medications.

Storage

Store SS-31 Elamipretide in the refrigerator at 36°F–46°F (2°C–8°C) to preserve peptide stability and potency. Protect from direct light at all times. Do not freeze. Keep the vial tightly capped when not in use. Keep out of reach of children. Use within the beyond-use date specified on your prescription label from South Lake Pharmacy. Discard if the solution appears discolored, cloudy, or contains visible particles.
